Workshop-training, Son-Kul field mission, August 2017

On August 15 - 17, 2017 republican Workshop “Public participation as a tool of environmental monitoring system improvement, Son-Kul Lake case study” took place at the conference-hall of Ak-Bermet Hotel, Issyk-Kul.Workshop has been organized under the Project’s support together with NGO “Independent Environmental Expertise”, the State Agency of Environment Protection and Forestry under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic (SAEPF) and the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE).

Theoretical part included presentations delivered by the experts from Finland and Kyrgyzstan as well as  discussions of such issues as benefits of civil observations for the environmental monitoring, principles of hydrobiological monitoring, method of water, bottom sediments and benthos sampling and other corresponding topics. 

Practical part consisted of trainings of environmental sampling, including benthos sampling and field mission to Son-Kul Lake  (August 17- 19, 2017) for real sampling. Collected samples of water, bottom sediments, benthos and fish will be analyzed for determination of persistent organic pollutants (POPs included into Stockholm convention’s list) and heavy metals content.

In the result of present joint initiative, the next steps toward integrating of efforts from different sectors represented by the network on protection of civil environmental interests and specialists from state environmental authorities. Such joined efforts are needed for proper settlement of environmental problems; creation of conditions for interinstitutional collaboration and network partnership for implementation of environmental monitoring tasks, capacity building of specialists responsible for comprehensive environmental monitoring.  

Present workshop became a good platform for establishment of effective partnership relationships that is essential component for integrated environmental management.

Analyses of collected samples will be made in October under expert support of specialists from the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE).
